Sydney FC beat Canberra United 1-0 while Brisbane Roar and the Melbourne Stars went down to a penalty shoot-out with Melbourne coming out on top 5-4. Sydney Sixers dream run comes to an end as Sydney Thunder take the WBBL trophy! It was a thrilling match with the Thunder taking control in the field. They were slow scoring to start, however remained close to the run a ball requirement to win. The last three overs saw wicket after wicket fall however Sydney Thunder came out on top to be the first to etch their name into the WBBL trophy. For a full report –

The Australian Jayco Opals have named the test squad in preparation for their trip to Rio on January 15. This will be their first preparation camp leading up to the Rio Olympics. The team will be able to familiarise themselves with the venue in Rio, which will be the same venue they will be playing at for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Canberra Capitals and WNBL MVP Abby Bishop announces that she will not play in the upcoming WNBL season. Abby announced she will be taking advantage of her current outstanding form and make the most of the opportunities that have arisen as a result. Abby will soon be off to Seattle to play in the WNBA and then to Europe.

The Caps will be hoping for a fit and healthy Lauren Jackson to head their team for the 2015/16 season. The Caps have secured Belgian centre Ann Wauters, who has played alongside Lauren previously.

Exciting news for the WNBL as it has been announced a new team will be introduced in the 2015/16 season. The team will come out of the South East Queensland region and will be coached by former Sydney Kings Coach and Boomers guard Shane Heal. The first player to have signed with the yet to be named team was LA Sparks and Opals player Erin Phillips.

Jess Bibby has announced she will forego her retirement plans for next season and re-join the Capitals line up. Bibby had admitted to poor form last season, along with her fractured neck, which ulitmately made her decision to initially retire. After talks with Coach Carrie Graff, Bibby realised she still has the ability to contribute to the team in the 2015/16 season.

Townsville Fire have won the WNBL Championship for 2014/15. The Fire have created history by becoming the first Queensland team to win the championship.

Fire won 75-65 over Bendigo Spirit after their third consecutive Grand Final clash. Townsville Fire have dominated the WNBL this season, losing only once at home.

Rachel McCully retired a WNBL Champion, and Mia Newly was crowned MVP.


After coaching Bendigo Spirit to three consecutive grand finals, is Bernie Harrower out of a job? Bernie’s position has been advertised by the board.

Hockey Australia has secured a three year deal to host international matches in the Northern Territory from 2016. The Hockeyroos and Kookaburras will play their international home games in the NT which is expected to commence in April of 2016.

This will also provide coaching, skills and development opportunities for the junior ranks.

Latest News – WNBL Basketball – 040215

Due to an ongoing knee injury, Lauren Jackson will not be playing the rest of the 2014/15 season for the University of Canberra Capitals in the WNBL.

The 33 year-old forward/centre has had ongoing problems with her knee and hip, causing her to have eleven months out of the game. Lauren is now facing additional knee surgery. Her long awaited return to the court was successful and promising for the University of Canberra Capitals. Lauren’s impact on the court was immediate and took a little pressure off fellow forward/centre Abby Bishop, who was the only post for Canberra.

With two games remaining in the regular season, the University of Canberra Capitals will have to dig deep to hold onto their current fourth place position to make the finals.

Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi will sit out the 2015 WNBA season. The reigning WNBA Finals MVP has decided to accept an offer made by her team in Russia, to rest and sit out the 2015 WNBA season.

The Phoenix Mercury were 2014 WNBA champions under Aussie coach Sandy Brondello. Diana decided to take the opportunity, however has vowed to return to the Phoenix Mercury in 2016.
